Easy No-Sew Christmas Ornament from Fabric Scraps

easy no-sew Christmas ornament from fabric scraps

This cute, no-sew Christmas ornament from fabric scraps could very well be one of the easiest crafts I have ever done.  I can’t even remember when I made the one in the picture, but a crafty friend showed me how to do this many years ago.

The ornament has a quilted look, like a crazy quilt, but there is zero sewing involved.

Now, even though our Christmas tree is not really country inspired, this little quilted guy fits right in. Our tree is  always crazily eclectic (kind of like me!), and my favorite ornaments are the ones my kids made when they were little. I add red and white beaded garland and lots of candy canes to the tree, so there is a definite red and white theme going on every year that helps tie all of the ornament styles together.

You will need:

  • Scissors
  • Butter knife
  • Cord or ribbon
  • Tack or pin

Here’s how to make it:

I made this one years ago, so I’m sorry there aren’t photos for each step. It’s very simple to do, though!

  • Cut fabric into tiny pieces of various sizes. (I think my pieces were a couple of inches each and less.)  Little squares or oblong pieces work well, but any shape really.  Differing sizes will give the ornament that fun, crazy quilted look.
  • Using a butter knife, gently push and tuck the edges of the fabric pieces into the ball. (You’ll just be tucking the perimeter of each piece of fabric into the ball.) Continue tucking each piece into the ball, (using a groove from the previous piece to start the the next one), until it is covered.  Be gentle toward the end, as some kinds of styrofoam can break apart easily if you’re not careful.
  • Cut a few inches of coordinating cord or ribbon, form a loop, and pin it into the ornament to create  the hanger. You can also just glue the ribbon onto the ornament.

That is literally all there is to it. Simple!

I can imagine some of these ornaments on a themed tree, with fabric chosen to match the theme – vintage style fabrics, music pages, candy cane fabric, calico, etc.  For a gift, you could make one with fabrics that relate to the gift recipient’s hobbies or style.

This would be a fun activity to do with kids.  Have fun with it!

  11. I love that this is a no-sew project but I am a terribly visual person so it would have been great to see a few pics of the "how to". I love your idea Pam. Thank you for joining Meraki Link Party. We hope to see you again.

    1. You are so right, Naush – Photos of the "how to" would be helpful. I, too, am a visual person, so I understand. I made this one so long ago, before I blogged, so there weren't any photos as I was making it. I have actually considered making another one, so I can photograph the process! It's so simple, though. You really can't go wrong. Once you start pushing the edges of the fabric into the ball, it all comes together quickly.

  12. Thank you for this! It brings back memories of watching my mom and my aunt make these back in the 70s. They’re both gone, but I’ll be doing this craft!
