A Back to School Treat

I’ll say it again, “I LOVE BACK TO SCHOOL TIME!”   I always have.

(UPDATE:  This is a throwback post.  Daughter and son are now both college graduates, so I have no kids going back to school.  I still love this time of year, though!

Only one of my own “kids” will be going back to school this year – her senior year of college!  How can that be?!  She’ll be in an apartment this year with her friends, and I’m excited for her. She’s a little sad, too, because this will be her last year.  She won’t miss the schoolwork, but she will miss the fun of living with her friends, late night snack runs, and walks in the woods behind the dorms. Transitions are so bittersweet.  (For kids and their moms.)

As many of you know, I’m a reading tutor.  I love to read, and I love to encourage kids to read.

This little treat isn’t my original idea, and I’ve seen many teachers do this. I instantly fell in love with the idea, and my students love these!  (Reading and candy–two of my favorite things…)

This one is pretty plain.  With more time, I would stamp something cute on the cardstock, or at least handletter it.  BUT, kids will enjoy this, no matter how plain the presentation.  (After all, gummy worms are pretty decorative all by themselves, right?  And, more importantly, pretty sweet!)

Here’s what to do:

All you need is some gummy worms, a plastic zipper bag (I used a snack size bag), some cardstock, and a stapler.  

  • Fill your bag with gummy worms.  Trader Joe’s has some that aren’t artificially colored.
  • Print, hand write, or stamp your message on the cardstock.
  • Fold the cardstock and staple to the bag.

  6. This is such a great idea. Maybe it will help encourage my youngest son to want to read more. I'm a huge book worm. I've finally got my oldest son hooked on books, but I need to get him there.

    1. My daughter and I are voracious readers, but I really had to motivate my son to read! He is now 25, and he loves to read about his interests, but mostly online, rarely in books!

  8. I really love this! I love reading. It was one of my favorite things to do as a child and young adult and even now as a 30 yr old. I will be pinning to make this for my kids. Thanks for the tip–I'm going to go to Trader Joes. I just love shopping there anyway!
