I hope you’ve had a good week. A fun thing happened to me a few days ago. I was invited to a family Facebook group by relatives in Brazil and found many, many long lost cousins. 

I learned, in the group, that the reason my Italian great-gandfather emigrated to the USA, instead of to Brazil with his two brothers, is that he got separated from his brothers at the port and missed the ship!  They lost touch with each other, as I understand it, and so the connection with all of these relatives was lost.  (I had always wondered why most of the people with my Italian maiden name I was finding online are in Brazil, not Italy, and why there are so few here in the USA!)

Have you ever found any long lost relatives online?

These are my paternal grandparents. This grandfather is the son of the my great-grandfather who missed the ship from Italy to Brazil and so ended up in the USA instead. I’ve had this photo for years, but I never knew his father’s story.

  2. hi Pam, that is an incredible story about your relatives! Last year one of my cousins led a family Zoom session once a month and all the cousins would participate as they could, it was lots of fun to "see" everyone and chat as they live all over the country from Washington state to North Carolina and many states in between.   3. Pam how wonderful!!! My Father was born on the ship in the port at Ellis Island in the month of May. Nobody knew what date it was so he picked his own birthday when he was about 3 years old. His father was from Sicily and his mother was from Naples. Like many others their name was changed to sound less Italian and some of the other relatives went from Italy to Germany. So we found a few relations in Germany. But the majority on my Fathers side were from Italy ( smile) That's right I am straight up half Italian and half British. Of course I was born in England, MY Mothers is British, but it's fun to say I am both. Great features my friend and thank you for sharing your family history story xo

  10. So cool to connect with family! Many years ago, my mom wrote out a family tree of her parents upon their parents and their parents tracing back to when our family came from Spain to the US. I would love to be able to fill the tree in with their kids and such.

  14. Absolutely loved seeing the vintage photo of your ancestors! I have been tracing our children's (and our) family tree since my eldest was born. All of ours were here before 1900, most before the Civil War. I love finding portraits and wedding pictures to see their faces. My husband's tree in the US goes to the first colonists in PA, NY and Maryland, including Quakers. It's a thrill to visit those places and see where they lived, worshipped and were laid to rest. Several years ago, we went to the Cotswolds of England, and stood in the church were my husband's worshipped and are buried back to a Templar Knight.
